The best excursions from Djerba
By 3H Travel

Pirate boat, quad, 4x4, Sahara, Ksar Ghilane, Tataouine ksour: compare the most popular excursions from Djerba, how long they take, what they offer and how to choose well.
An excursion from Djerba can last two hours or two days. To avoid disappointment, compare the duration, the time spent on the road and what you really want to see. Here are the most popular excursions, with their highlights and our advice.
Excursions on the island (half day)
- Cultural tour: Houmt Souk, Erriadh, Guellala, El Ghriba. Ideal on your first or last day, as distances are short.
- Quad or buggy ride: thrills and scenery; book with an operator that provides helmets and a briefing.
- Camel or horse ride: calmer, especially late in the day.
Pirate boat and Flamingo Island (full day)
This is the family outing par excellence: sailing on the lagoon, swimming, lunch on board or on the beach, entertainment. Flamingo presence varies with the season; the atmosphere and the sea are always there. See our Flamingo Island guide.
Djerba Explore and family outings
The Djerba Explore park offers a look at Tunisian rural life and an area devoted to Nile crocodiles, often combined with a tour of the island. Handy with children.
Tataouine ksour, Chenini and Matmata (full day)
This excursion takes you to the mainland, about two hours by road: fortified granaries (ghorfas), the mountain village of Chenini, and the troglodyte houses of Matmata. Film fans will recognise settings from the Star Wars saga. See our guide to Tataouine, Matmata and Chenini.
Ksar Ghilane and the Sahara (long day or 2 days)
The start is early, often before 7 am. Allow several hours on the road each way, with a dip in the oasis hot spring and, depending on the package, a camel or quad ride. For Douz and the big dunes, the two-day option with a night in a tent is far more comfortable. See our Douz and Ksar Ghilane guide.
How to choose well
- Time on the road: the further the destination, the more time it takes. A one-day Ksar Ghilane trip is possible but dense.
- Season: the desert is best from October to April; in summer, favour the sea and very early starts.
- Group or private: a private outing with a driver lets you adapt the stops, useful with children or older travellers.
- What is included: meals, drinks, entrance fees, optional paid activities on site. Always ask for the list in writing.
Cultural excursions further afield: Tozeur and the Djerid
For longer stays, the Djerid (Tozeur, Nefta, Chott el Jerid) combines with Douz over three days: salt lake, mountain oases and film settings. It is a real tour, not a day trip. See our Tozeur and Chott el Jerid tour.
Shared or private: the practical differences
On a shared excursion you travel with other visitors, times are fixed and the price per person is lower. Privately, you choose the departure time, the stops and the pace; the cost is split between participants and becomes worthwhile from four people. For families with young children and for photographers, going private really changes the experience.
Questions to ask before booking
- What is the exact pick-up and return time at the hotel?
- Is the meal included, and the drinks?
- Are site and museum entrance fees included?
- What happens in bad weather (especially for boat trips)?
- What are the cancellation terms?
A serious agency answers these questions in writing before any confirmation.
