When to visit Djerba: month-by-month weather

By 3H Travel

What is the best time to go to Djerba? Temperatures, swimming, crowds and events month by month, to choose the season that suits your stay.

Djerba enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate softened by the sea: summers are hot but breezy, winters cool but rarely harsh. The “best” time therefore depends on what you want: swimming, sightseeing, desert, or simply peace and quiet. Here is a month-by-month guide, to be taken as rough figures, since temperatures vary from year to year.

December to February: mild and quiet

Days are cool, often 12 to 18 °C, with a few rainy and windy days. The sea is cold: you do not come to swim, but to walk, explore Houmt Souk without the crowds and enjoy hotel rates that are often lower. It is also a good time for the desert by day, but pack warm clothes for nights in a tent.

March to May: the ideal spring for sightseeing

Temperatures rise pleasantly, from about 18 to 27 °C, and the island turns green. This is the best season for excursions: Tataouine, Matmata, Douz. The sea stays cool in March and April, and is nicer from May. The El Ghriba pilgrimage takes place in spring; check the dates and access conditions, which can change.

June: the good compromise

The sea warms up, the sun is out and crowds are still moderate before July. For a stay mixing beach and sightseeing, it is often the best balance.

July and August: peak beach season

It is hot, often 30 to 35 °C or more on some days, the sea is warm and beaches are lively. This is high season: hotels are in highest demand, so book early. For excursions, leave very early in the morning and avoid the desert at the hottest hours.

September and October: warm sea, fewer people

Many travellers consider this the best time: the sea stays warm, days are easier to bear and crowds thin out. Autumn is also when flamingos start to be easier to see on the lagoon.

November: calm and light

Temperatures fall and swimming becomes rarer, but the light is superb for photography and sightseeing. A good option for a quiet stay or a tour of the south.

According to your plans

  • Beach and family: June, early July, September.
  • Excursions and desert: March to May and October to November.
  • Budget and calm: November to February, outside school holidays.
  • Full-on atmosphere: July and August, booking early.

Sea temperature

The Mediterranean around Djerba is cool until May (around 18 to 20 °C), pleasant in June, warm from July to September (often 25 °C and above) and still mild in October. The shallow lagoon warms faster than the open sea, which is why swimming on boat trips is pleasant from late spring.

Wind, sirocco and rain

Wind is the island’s usual companion: it cools the summer pleasantly, but can spoil the beach on some days and stir up the sea. The sirocco, a hot wind from the south, sometimes blows for a few days in spring and summer. Rain is rare and concentrated between October and March, in short spells.

Events through the year

  • Spring: El Ghriba pilgrimage in Erriadh.
  • Summer: festivals and evening events in hotels and in Houmt Souk.
  • Late December: International Sahara Festival in Douz, to combine with a tour.
  • Ramadan: shop and restaurant hours change; the evening atmosphere is special and warm. Dates vary each year.

Practical tips

School holidays and festivals (including Eid) push up crowds and prices; check the calendar before fixing your dates. Wind can cool the coast and stir the sea: keep a light jacket for evenings, even in summer.
