From Djerba to the Sahara: Douz and Ksar Ghilane

By 3H Travel

Ksar Ghilane oasis at the edge of the desert

How to get from Djerba to the Sahara: distances and driving times to Douz and Ksar Ghilane, in a day or with a night in a tent, what to do there and the best season for the desert.

From Djerba, the Sahara is not a distant image: in a morning’s drive you go from the beaches to the first dunes. There are two gateways, Douz and Ksar Ghilane. They are quite different and need different planning. Here is what you need to choose.

Two gateways to the desert

Douz, south of Kebili, is the “gateway to the Sahara”: a real oasis town with its market, palm grove and, just behind, the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental. It also hosts the International Sahara Festival at the end of December. Ksar Ghilane is something else: a small isolated oasis at the end of a track, with a hot spring, camps and an old Roman fort among the dunes.

Distances and driving times

  • Djerba (Houmt Souk) to Douz: about 230 km via Zarzis or Ajim, then Medenine and Kebili; allow 3.5 to 4 hours.
  • Djerba to Ksar Ghilane: a little over 200 km via Medenine and Tataouine; 3.5 to 4 hours, the last stretch on a slower road, usually by 4x4.
  • Douz to Ksar Ghilane: about 100 to 120 km on the desert track, 4x4 only.

Times depend on the Jorf–Ajim ferry or the El Kantara causeway, the season and your stops: build in some margin.

In one day: Ksar Ghilane

This is the most common option from Djerba. Very early start (6 to 7 am), coffee on the way, arrival at the oasis late morning. Swim in the hot spring, camel or quad ride to the Tisavar fort (optional activities), lunch under a tent, then return in the late afternoon, sometimes with a stop at a ksar on the way. A long but unforgettable day.

In two days: Douz and a night in a tent

To really taste the desert, it is better to sleep there. On day one, drive to Douz with a stop in Matmata or at the ksour, then set off by camel or 4x4 to a camp in the dunes: sunset, dinner around the fire, a night under the stars. Next day, sunrise, breakfast, return to Djerba via Douz, sometimes passing through Ksar Ghilane.

Which season?

The ideal period runs from October to April: mild days, cool to cold nights (pack good layers for the night in a tent). May and September are still possible with early starts. In high summer the heat makes the day hard and most visitors prefer the sea.

What to pack

  • Scarf or cheche, sunglasses, sunscreen, closed shoes.
  • Warm jacket and socks for the night, even if the day is hot.
  • Swimsuit and towel for the Ksar Ghilane spring.
  • Head torch, power bank, small dinar notes.

Douz, the town and its market

Before the dunes, take time for the town: Thursday market is one of the liveliest in the south, with stalls of deglet nour dates, leather craftsmen and herders selling camels and sheep. The Douz palm grove, crossed by small roads, can be explored on foot or by carriage. The main square and the cafés around it are the heart of local life.

The International Sahara Festival

At the end of December, Douz hosts a few days of camel and horse races, fantasias, Bedouin poetry and music. Accommodation sells out long in advance: if you aim for these dates, book early and plan a night on site.

The Roman fort of Tisavar

At Ksar Ghilane, a short camel, quad or walking trip (about an hour) leads to the ruins of Tisavar fort, an outpost of the Roman limes in the 2nd century. From the top of the walls, the view over the dunes at sunset is one of the finest in southern Tunisia.
