Djerba with kids: beaches, activities and family-friendly excursions
By 3H Travel

Djerba is an easy destination with children: calm shallow sea, short distances, wildlife park, pirate boat, camel rides. Our tips for organising a stress-free family stay.
Travelling with children calls for short days, flexibility and shallow water. Djerba ticks those boxes: the island is small, the beaches are gentle and there is no shortage of activities. Here is how to put together a family stay, according to your children’s ages.
Beaches made for children
The north-east coast (tourist zone, Midoun, Aghir) offers fine sand and water that shelves gently, often without waves. It is ideal for little ones. Bring a parasol or beach tent, water shoes for rocky areas and good sun protection: the sun is strong from April. Beach hotels often have kids’ clubs and shallow pools.
Djerba Explore: crocodiles and a traditional village
At the north-eastern tip, near the Taguermess lighthouse, the Djerba Explore park brings together a Nile crocodile farm, a museum of arts and traditions and a reconstructed village with craftsmen’s workshops. The crocodile feeding, at set times, is the children’s favourite moment. Allow two to three hours and avoid midday in summer.
The pirate boat
The trip to Flamingo Island aboard a boat decked out as a pirate ship is designed for families: calm sailing, games on board, swimming in shallow water, a meal on the beach. Check that child-size life jackets are available and bring sun protection. See our Flamingo Island guide.
Camels, carriages and ponies
Camel rides on the beach or in the countryside usually last an hour: enough for fun, not too much for fatigue. Horse-drawn carriage tours through the Midoun countryside or around the lagoon delight the youngest. Riding centres also offer pony rides.
Culture, gently
With children, favour short, lively visits: the Guellala potters turning clay, the colourful Djerbahood murals in Erriadh (a real treasure hunt), the Houmt Souk fish market in the morning, Borj El Kebir fort and its ramparts. Half a day is enough, preferably in the morning.
And the desert?
From six or seven years old, a day to Matmata and the ksour, or a night in a tent near Douz, leaves unforgettable memories. Journeys are long: plan breaks, games and snacks, and choose a private outing to adapt the pace. For the youngest, save the desert for a future trip. See our Djerba to Sahara guide.

Practical tips
- Well-stocked pharmacies in Houmt Souk and Midoun; still bring your usual medicines.
- Bottled water for children, washed and peeled fruit.
- Restaurants happily welcome families; simple dishes (grills, pasta, couscous) are usually a hit.
- Car seats: request them in advance for transfers and excursions.
With a baby or toddler
Djerba lends itself well to a first trip: short flights from Europe and Tunis, hotels with cots on request, shallow water and well-stocked pharmacies. Avoid July and August if your child struggles with heat, and favour May-June or September. Pushchairs cope well in the tourist zone, less so in the medina lanes: a baby carrier is useful.
Teenagers: what to offer them
Half-day quad or buggy rides, water sports in the tourist zone, a Ksar Ghilane day with a swim in the spring and quad in the dunes, Djerbahood street art for photos. The desert with a night in a tent is often their best memory.
Safety and common sense
The sea is calm but always watch children, especially near rocky areas and on boat trips. On excursions, bring plenty of water, caps and regular breaks. Save the hotel’s number and ours in the phone of every child old enough to have one.
