Do Tunisians need a visa for Türkiye?

By 3H Travel

Visa stamps in a passport

Visa exemption for Tunisians, permitted length of stay, entry conditions, cases where an e-visa or consular visa applies, documents to show on arrival: a clear overview before you leave for Istanbul.

Türkiye is one of Tunisians’ favourite destinations, and the same question comes up before every departure: do I need a visa or an e-visa? The official answer is simple for tourist stays, but a few particular situations are worth knowing. Here is the overview, to be checked before each trip on the website of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the consulate, as rules can change.

No visa for short tourist stays

According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, holders of an ordinary Tunisian passport (and official passports) are exempt from visa for stays of up to 90 days. So there is no e-visa to apply for and no fee to pay for a tourist trip, a family visit or a short business trip. On arrival, the passport is simply stamped.

What the exemption does not cover

  • Working, studying or settling in Türkiye: you need the appropriate visa and then a residence permit, to be requested from the Turkish consulate in Tunis before departure.
  • Staying beyond the permitted period: overstaying leads to a fine and an entry ban.
  • Repeated stays: stays are counted over a rolling 180-day period. If you travel often, keep track of your days.

Why do people talk about an e-visa?

The Turkish e-visa concerns many nationalities that are not exempt, and some people who live in Tunisia without holding Tunisian nationality. If you travel with someone of another nationality, check their situation separately on the official e-visa website, which is the only reliable channel: avoid paid websites that imitate the official portal.

Entry conditions to respect

Even without a visa, border police may ask for:

  • a valid passport in good condition with sufficient validity (allow at least six months to avoid any issue when leaving Tunisia and on your return);
  • a return or onward ticket;
  • a hotel booking or an address for your stay;
  • proof of sufficient means for the length of the stay.

These documents are rarely requested, but it is better to have them with you, on paper or on your phone.

Children and minors

Children travel with their own passport. A Tunisian minor travelling without both parents must have a parental exit authorisation compliant with Tunisian rules; check before departure.

Flights and arrival

Direct flights link Tunis to Istanbul in about two and a half hours; from Djerba, the journey is generally via Tunis. Istanbul has two airports, Istanbul (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side: check which one is on your ticket to arrange the transfer to your hotel.

Passport: the validity that really matters

Turkish rules require a passport valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted length of stay, in practice about five months on entry. But airlines and Tunisian border police often apply the stricter six-month rule. To avoid being denied boarding, treat six months as the minimum.

Tourist currency allowance and payments

Tunisian residents have an annual foreign currency allowance for tourism, with rules and a ceiling set by the Central Bank of Tunisia. Ask your bank before departure: available amount, international card, documents to show. In Türkiye, card payments are very common, but keep some lira in cash for small purchases.

Health and safety

No vaccinations are required. Travel insurance remains strongly recommended: private care is good but paid for. Istanbul is a big city: watch out for pickpockets on public transport and in crowded places, and use official taxis or ride-hailing apps.
