Visiting Houmt Souk: souks, Borj El Kebir and Djerba’s heritage
By 3H Travel

Houmt Souk is the heart of Djerba: white medina, craft souks, fondouks, fishing harbour, Borj El Kebir fort and museum. Our itinerary for a successful half day in town.
Houmt Souk literally means “the market quarter”. Djerba’s capital has stayed true to its name: you come here to wander, shop, drink tea and watch island life go by. It is also where our agency is based, and we love sending our visitors around it on foot. Here is a simple itinerary for half a day.
The medina and the souks
The historic centre is a maze of white lanes and shaded squares. The covered souk gathers jewellers, fabric and spice merchants; around it are weaving workshops and shops selling pottery, basketry and leather. The fish market, lively in the morning, is worth a look for its auction. Bargain calmly, it is part of the game, and keep smiling.
The fondouks
These old caravanserais, built around a galleried courtyard, housed merchants and their animals. Several have been turned into hotels or shops and can be visited freely: they give a good idea of the island’s traditional architecture, plain and full of light.
Borj El Kebir, the fort facing the sea
Also called Borj Ghazi Mustapha, this fort overlooks the harbour north of the town. Built on older foundations and reworked in the 16th century, its ramparts offer a view over the sea and the fishing boats. Opening days and hours vary with the season: check locally before you go.
The museum of traditional heritage
Housed in a former zaouia, the museum displays costumes, jewellery, pottery and everyday objects from Djerba. A short, informative visit that helps you understand what you will see later in the villages.
The harbour and seafront
North of the medina, the harbour is the departure point for boat trips to Flamingo Island. In the late afternoon fishermen return and mend their nets; the seafront cafés are perfect for a mint tea at sunset.
Suggested itinerary (half day)
- Morning: fish market, then the souks, with a stop in a fondouk.
- Mid-morning: heritage museum.
- Before noon: Borj El Kebir and a walk along the harbour.
- Fish lunch near the quays or in the medina.
Practical tips
- The centre is explored on foot; park on the outskirts if you have a car.
- Shops often close in the middle of the day and on Friday at noon.
- Dress simply and respectfully; ask before photographing people.
- Houmt Souk is about ten minutes from the airport: handy for a last visit before your flight.
What to buy in Houmt Souk
Silver jewellery in the jewellers’ souk, weavings and shawls in the workshops, Guellala pottery, palm-leaf basketry, spices, olive oil and pastries. Medina shops expect bargaining; craftsmen’s workshops often display their prices. For a gift, a ceramic piece or a hand-woven shawl are safe bets.
Where to take a break
The cafés on the medina’s small squares serve mint tea and Turkish coffee at any hour. Near the harbour, fish restaurants serve the day’s catch grilled. In the evening, the seafront and the medina terraces come alive, especially in summer.
Houmt Souk in the evening
The town does not empty at nightfall: families out walking, shops open late in summer, ice-cream parlours and pastry shops. It is the most pleasant time to stroll in July and August, once the heat has eased.
Extending the visit
From Houmt Souk, the villages of Erriadh and Guellala are twenty to thirty minutes away. Our cultural excursion combines the town and the villages in one day with a driver. See our excursions in Djerba and our guide to Erriadh, Guellala and El Ghriba.
