Where to stay in Djerba: which area to choose?
By 3H Travel

Houmt Souk, the Sidi Mahrez tourist zone, Midoun, Aghir, Erriadh: each corner of Djerba has its own feel. Compare the areas to choose where to stay according to your trip, budget and outings.
In Djerba, the choice of area matters as much as the choice of hotel. Whether you want to sleep near the beaches, the souks or somewhere quiet, your days will be very different. Here are the main areas, with their strengths and limits. We do not name individual establishments here: the offer changes, and the right choice depends on your dates and budget.
The tourist zone (Sidi Mahrez)
This is the long north-east seafront, home to most beach hotels, often on an all-inclusive basis. It suits beach holidays and families: fine sand, calm sea, entertainment. On the other hand, the atmosphere is very holiday-oriented and you need transport to visit the villages. Houmt Souk is about twenty minutes by car, depending on traffic.
Midoun and surroundings
Midoun is the island’s second town, with a market, restaurants and local shops close to the beaches. Accommodation is varied, from small establishments to beach hotels. It is a good compromise between local life and the sea.
Houmt Souk
Staying in the capital means choosing local life: souks, restaurants, the port, the fort and small guesthouses. Beaches are a few kilometres away, so it is less practical for a full beach week, but the location is excellent for a cultural stay, for excursion departures and for enjoying the town in the evening. It is also close to the airport.
Aghir and the east coast
In the north-east, Aghir offers long, calmer beaches and a less urban feel. It suits travellers who want peace and the seafront, with fewer people.
Erriadh and the interior
To sleep in a traditional house or guesthouse in the heart of the villages, the centre of the island is a lovely option. You will be close to Djerbahood and El Ghriba but far from the beach, so plan on having a vehicle.
How to choose
- Beach holiday, children: tourist zone or Midoun, with an all-inclusive plan if you want a controlled budget.
- Culture and excursions: Houmt Souk or the centre of the island.
- Peace and quiet: Aghir or the east coast.
- Short trip with an early flight: Houmt Souk, near the airport.
Questions to ask before booking
What is the real distance to the beach? Which meal plan (breakfast, half board, all inclusive)? Is there a shuttle, a heated pool in winter, family rooms? What are the cancellation terms? These points vary a lot from one establishment to another.
Guesthouse, club hotel or rental: which formula?
A beachfront club hotel suits “no-questions” holidays: meals, pool, entertainment and beach in one place. A guesthouse, often a restored menzel, offers calm, traditional architecture and a personal welcome, ideal for a couple or small groups. A rental (apartment or villa) makes sense for a large family or a long stay, provided you have a vehicle.
Winter and low season
Many hotels in the tourist zone stay open all year, sometimes with a heated pool; some close for a few weeks. In winter, guesthouses in the interior are very pleasant, provided you check the heating. Rates are then the lowest of the year.
Accessibility and special needs
If you travel with a pushchair, a wheelchair or an elderly person, say so before booking: beach access, lifts, ground-floor rooms and shuttles are not systematic. We check these points for you with the establishments.
