Jemaa el-Fnaa square in Marrakech at night

Morocco

Marrakech

Jemaa el-Fnaa square, medina souks, riads and gardens.

About this destination

Marrakech, the “red city”, charms with its lively medina, riads hidden behind discreet doors and Jemaa el-Fnaa square, whose mood changes from day to night. Between souks, palaces, gardens and the nearby Atlas mountains, it is an ideal destination for a short break, visa-free for Tunisians.

Things to see and do

  • Jemaa el-Fnaa square at sunset, then its food stalls.
  • The souks, the Ben Youssef medersa, the Koutoubia.
  • The Bahia Palace, the Saadian tombs, the El Badi palace.
  • The Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent museum, the Menara.
  • A traditional hammam and a night in a riad.
  • An excursion into the Atlas (Ourika valley, Imlil) or to Essaouira.

How to get there from Djerba

Tunis–Marrakech or Tunis–Casablanca flights (then train or domestic flight) take 2.5 to 3 hours, direct or with a stopover depending on the airline; from Djerba, connect in Tunis. Tunisian nationals do not need a visa for Morocco for a tourist stay, with a valid passport. In Marrakech, the airport is 15 minutes from the centre; the medina is explored on foot, with “petit taxis” for the rest.

When to go

March to May and October to November for mild temperatures. Summer is very hot (often above 38 °C), but evenings remain pleasant. Winter is mild by day and cool at night; the Atlas peaks are then snow-capped.
