Tunis & Carthage

A UNESCO-listed medina, the ancient ruins of Carthage and the capital’s museums.

About this destination

Tunis, the capital, and Carthage, its ancient neighbour, are visited together. The Tunis medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, has hundreds of monuments: the Zitouna mosque, covered souks, palaces and medersas. A few kilometres away, the ruins of Carthage, the Antonine Baths and the Bardo Museum, with its collection of Roman mosaics, tell three thousand years of history.

Things to see and do

  • The medina: Zitouna mosque, perfumers’ and chechia souks, Dar Ben Abdallah, Tourbet el Bey.
  • The Bardo National Museum and its Roman mosaics.
  • Carthage: Antonine Baths, Byrsa hill, Punic ports, Roman theatre.
  • Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the new town, cafés and 20th-century architecture.
  • Sidi Bou Said and La Marsa, a few TGM train stops away.

How to get there from Djerba

By air: scheduled Djerba–Tunis flights take about an hour. By road: about 500 km and 7 hours via Gabès, Sfax and Sousse, by car, louage or long-distance bus. In Tunis, the light rail, taxis and the TGM train to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said make getting around easy. We arrange flights, hotel and guided visits on request.

When to go

All year round. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most pleasant for walking in the medina and around the Carthage sites. Summer is hot but tempered by the sea; winter, mild and sometimes rainy, is perfect for museums.
